Early in 2008 some searchers spotted on Google Earth what looked like an impact crater in southern Egypt, field expeditions in February 20010 confirmed that it was in fact a relatively new meteorite impact crater, only about 5000 years old. Thousands of fragments were gathered around the site but since it is very close to the border between Egypt and Sudan, the area is now closed to further research.
